Last week the Laverne FFA had one of the most busy and most successful weeks it has ever had. FFA is the organization that never sleeps and this last week was another great example of that. During the week there was an FFA event on every day of the week.
Starting on Monday, November 13th, 2023, the Laverne FFA traveled to Oklahoma Panhandle State University for their annual fall speech contest. There were seven Laverne members who traveled to this contest including: Timber Baker, Kensli Shaffer, Taylor Lewis, Camdyn Kolbe, Shane Goodwin, Corinn Tillery, and Mary Katherine Teal. The contest was a big success for the Laverne students. Kensli Shaffer placed second in her division, Timber Baker, Mary Katherine Teal, Camdyn Kolbe, and Taylor Lewis all placed fourth in their divisions.
The next day on November 14th, almost one hundred Laverne FFA members traveled back to OPSU for their annual interscholastics contest. This contest features many different kinds of Career Development Events (CDEs). This contest was a huge success for the Laverne FFA and we were able to bring home many awards. In the floriculture contest Jaycee Estep placed second and Arlie McAtee placed third individually, the two Laverne teams placed first and second. The Laverne entomology team placed third. Shane Goodwin placed second as an individual in the agriculture communications contest. In livestock judging the Laverne Senior team placed second overall. Horse evaluation was introduced as a new contest this year and Laverne placed second as a team and had the second and third place individuals, Kylen Kamp and Codie Dixon. In natural resources,another new contest, the Laverne team placed second. The Laverne Greenhand Quizbowl Team placed second as well. For shooting sports in the junior division Cy Bentley took first place and shot 19, Xander Graves placed second with a score of 18, and the junior team placed first overall with a total score of 51. In the senior shooting sports division the Laverne team placed second overall with a score of 42. Three Laverne students also brought home $500 scholarships for their placings in their events. OPSU Interscholastics 2023 was a great experience and a very big success for the Laverne FFA.
Wednesday, November 15th, the Laverne FFA Junior Shooting Sports Team traveled to Arcadia, Oklahoma for the 2023 State Shooting Sports Contest. This team consists of Cy Bentley, Bronc Maynes, Xander Graves, and Dalon Clark. They placed 6th in the state and had a great season overall.
Next up on Thursday was the Northwest Area American Farmers and Ranchers speech contest in Enid,Oklahoma. Kensli Shaffer proudly represented the Laverne FFA placing third in the intermediate agriscience division.
On Friday, November 17th, the Laverne FFA Livestock judging team headed to Cherokee, Oklahoma for the 4th annual CUTS Livestock Judging Contest. This contest was a great experience for all.
Finally on Saturday, FFA member Camdyn Kolbe traveled back to Goodwell, Oklahoma for the OPSU Sheep Showdown Jackpot. At the show Camdyn had a very successful day bringing home the titles of Reserve Breed Champion and Reserve Senior Showman.
Overall this past week was a huge success for all the Laverne FFA members. These accomplishments are some to be very proud of. Every member would like to give a huge thank you to ag teacher, Mrs. Kolbe, for traveling all over, coordinating, and pushing every student to do their best. Keep your eyes and ears open because the Laverne FFA Chapter is just getting started!
