The Laverne FFA Chapter participates in many things throughout the year. From livestock judging to speeches the Laverne FFA members do great things. Member Spotlights focus on an outstanding member who is impacting the agriculture community around them. This spotlight is all about ,“chicken farmer”, Dal Bentley.
From a young age Dal has always had a love for the farm. Over the years, Dal has owned many different varieties of poultry, however his passion has always been with chickens. This past year in his Ag Exploration class, his ag teacher, Mrs. Butler encouraged him to develop his love for chickens into an SAE project. Through FFA and with a lot of support from his parents Dal was able to purchase 50 young pullets to begin his flock. Just like that Bent D Farms was hatched.
Dal knew that his first goal with Bent D Eggs was to sell eggs to his community. With lots of patience and research Dal was able to get an Egg Packers license through the Oklahoma Department of Agriculture, Food and Forestry. Dal then approached Lana Shaffer at Collective Roots to see if he would be able to sell his homegrown product at her farm-to-market store. With Mrs.Shaffer’s eager approval Dal began selling his eggs. Dal’s eggs are delivered fresh weekly and are available for purchase at Collective Roots.
Dal’s upcoming goal for Bent D Farms is to add an incubator so he can continue to grow and develop his business. Some more long term goals of Dal’s include selling home raised chicks and replacement laying hens as well as learning to market his product more effectively. He may even try to introduce competitive chicken shows to the Laverne area in the future.
Dal would like to thank Collective Roots for allowing him the opportunity to utilize their store to help him with this outstanding project.
Dal is currently an 8th grader at Laverne Schools. He is an active member of the FFA and enjoys showing pigs and shooting sports. He participates in many other school activities such as football, basketball, baseball, and band. Dal also enjoys being active in the Laverne First Baptist Church Youth Group, where he leads Bible studies and serves on the mission team. Dal is not sure of his future plans but would love to spend as much time as he can in agriculture.
Dal is a truly outstanding member of the Laverne FFA. We would like to wish Dal lots of “cluck” in the future. This months Member Spotlight, chicken farmer, Dal Bentley.
